Treating dry eyes is a strong focus in our practice. Dry eyes affects contact lens comfort, ability to read and perform computer work efficiently.
We perform dry eye evaluations to determine the cause of dryness. Dry eyes is more complex than just being “dry”. Multiple causes and treatment options make this a much more complex condition to treat.
TESTS PERFORMED TO DIAGNOSE DRY EYES:
- Temporary dyes are used to stain the tears and the front surface of the eye to view under high magnification and evaluate the severity of dryness on the eye. Dry spots on the cornea cause pain, burning, decreased vision, blur and light sensitivity. These dry spots can also increase the risk for infections.
2. Evaluation of the eyelids is important due to the role the lids play in maintaining the tear film. The eyelids blink to smooth the tear film over the front surface of the eyes. The oil glands in the lids secrete an oil to coat the tear film and reduce evaporation between blinks.

THE TEAR FILM IS MORE COMPLEX THAN JUST ONE LAYER OF WATER. THERE ARE MULTIPLE LAYERS THAT WORK TOGETHER TO PROTECT THE FRONT SURFACE AND PROVIDE CLEAR, COMFORTABLE VISION. READ MORE ABOUT THE TEAR FILM COMPONENTS.
TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE PRESCRIBED BASED ON SEVERITY OF THE DRY EYE DISEASE:
